Brief History of the Golf Ball
One of the earliest golf balls was a simple lather pouch with goose feathers and was known as a featherie. To make the ball hard it was filled wet and with wet feathers. In those days people thought that there would be less drag if the ball was smooth so the pouch was sewn inside out and only a few stitches on the outside once it was filled. Then it was dried, covered in oil then painted white. It work OK, a typical drive was about 150 yards. Unfortunately, if the ball got wet it was ruined. In 1845 a ball was made of the gum of a Malaysian Sapodilla Tree. After being heated the gum was moulded into a ball. It was around this time that a university professor found that the smooth ball would go further if it were marked or scratched. Many designs were “played with” and by 1930 the golf ball with dimples was sighted as the standard. Today’s Ball Design So it was scientifically proven that balls with dimples fly farther than smooth balls. That’s why today, all golf balls have dimples which are designed to shape and increase the lift of the ball. Most golf balls have between 300 and 450 dimples. There are a range of golf balls to suit different golfers, men and ladies, some for the more experienced player and a range for those players who either play for fun or those who are just beginning and are more likely to lose golf balls on the course. As with all diamonds a girl can show off a little using the Precept Lady Diamond Golf Ball especially when it will help add those all important extra yards.
